To maximize occupant safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Maserati GranTurismo have pretensioners to eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The Toyota Supra doesn’t offer pretensioners.

The GranTurismo has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Supra doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The GranTurismo offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Supra only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the GranTurismo and the Supra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Maserati GranTurismo weighs 672 to 891 pounds more than the Toyota Supra. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The GranTurismo comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Supra’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Maserati vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Maserati above average in initial quality. With 12 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

The GranTurismo Modena’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 228 more horsepower (483 vs. 255) and 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 295) than the Supra’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GranTurismo Modena’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 101 more horsepower (483 vs. 382) and 75 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 368) than the Supra’s optional 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranTurismo Trofeo’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 160 more horsepower (542 vs. 382) and 119 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 368) than the Supra’s optional 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GranTurismo’s fuel efficiency. The Supra doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The GranTurismo has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Supra (18.5 vs. 13.7 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

All wheel drive, available in the GranTurismo, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Toyota Supra is not available with all wheel drive.

For better traction, the GranTurismo has larger tires than the Supra (F:265/30R20 & R:295/30R21 vs. F:255/35R19 & R:275/35R19).

The GranTurismo’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Supra 2.0’s standard 40 series tires. The GranTurismo’s tires are lower profile than the Supra 3.0’s 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranTurismo has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Supra 2.0. The Supra’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The front and rear suspension of the GranTurismo uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Supra, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The GranTurismo has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GranTurismo’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Supra doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GranTurismo’s wheelbase is 18.1 inches longer than on the Supra (115.3 inches vs. 97.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GranTurismo is 2 inches wider in the front and 2.8 inches wider in the rear than on the Supra.

The front grille of the GranTurismo uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Supra doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The GranTurismo has standard seating for 4 passengers; the Supra can only carry 2.

The GranTurismo has 38.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Supra (89 vs. 50.9).

The GranTurismo has a larger trunk than the Supra (10.9 vs. 10.2 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the GranTurismo’s trunk can be opened just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The GranTurismo also offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by kicking your foot under the back bumper. The Supra doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Supra 3.0, the GranTurismo has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GranTurismo’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Supra does not have an oil pressure gauge.

Extended Keyless Go standard on the GranTurismo allows you to unlock the driver’s door, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The Toyota Supra’s Smart Key System doesn’t unlock the trunk.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the GranTurismo to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Supra doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the GranTurismo offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Supra doesn’t offer cornering lights. The GranTurismo also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GranTurismo has standard extendable sun visors. The Supra doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The GranTurismo’s sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The Supra’s visors are fixed into the windshield header.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the GranTurismo keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Supra doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the GranTurismo’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Supra doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Maserati GranTurismo has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Supra 3.0 Manual/Premium/45th Anniversary offers wireless charging.
