Safety

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GranCabrio. But it costs extra on the M4.

Both the GranCabrio and the M4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Engine

The GranCabrio’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 69 more horsepower (542 vs. 473) and 81 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 406) than the M4’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranCabrio’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 39 more horsepower (542 vs. 503) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 479) than the M4 Competition’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranCabrio’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 19 more horsepower (542 vs. 523) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 479) than the M4 Competition xDrive’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranCabrio’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (487 vs. 479) than the M4 CS’ standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the GranCabrio gets better mileage than the M4 Convertible:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GranCabrio’s fuel efficiency. The M4 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The GranCabrio has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the M4 (18.5 vs. 15.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Maserati GranCabrio higher (5 out of 10) than the BMW M4 (4). This means the GranCabrio produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the M4 every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The Maserati GranCabrio comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the M4.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the GranCabrio has larger rear tires than the M4 (295/30R21 vs. 285/35R19).

The GranCabrio’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the M4’s standard 40 series front and 35 series rear tires. The GranCabrio’s tires are lower profile than the M4’s optional 35 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranCabrio has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels are standard on the M4. The M4’s largest wheels are only 19-inches in the front and 20-inches in the rear.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the GranCabrio uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the M4, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The GranCabrio has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GranCabrio’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The M4 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GranCabrio’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the M4 (115.3 inches vs. 112.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GranCabrio is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the M4.

Chassis

The front grille of the GranCabrio uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The M4 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The GranCabrio has 5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the M4 Convertible (89 vs. 84).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the M4, the GranCabrio has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GranCabrio’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The M4 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the GranCabrio to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The M4 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GranCabrio has standard extendable sun visors. The M4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The GranCabrio has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the M4.

The GranCabrio has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The M4 doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.
